My profession is the tool that I use every day to improve my patients’ overall health through a comfortable and gentle experience. I love working with my patients, identifying their needs, and making them feel comfortable in the dental setting. The sense of accomplishment that comes when I have improved a patient’s life is something that constantly fuels my love of this profession.

Outside the Office
I have lived in Washington, DC since 2011. My time outside the office is spent with my wife, Ynty, running, and traveling. I also volunteer at the Spanish Catholic Center in Washington, DC.
I wear many hats in the office, both behind the scenes to ensure everything runs smoothly from an administrative aspect, and at our front desk interacting with patients. I’ve been with our Fairfax office for 12 years. My favorite thing by far has been the relationships that I have developed with the patients and my coworkers in that time. I feel that our entire team works as a family to give the best care to our patients.
I spend most of my spare time with my family and my dog. We like going to the beach and visiting home in West Virginia. I enjoy working in my garden and spend a lot of time painting. I work primarily in acrylics and usually paint on large scale canvases. You might see my work hanging in the office or in local galleries!
I am responsible for all aspects of front office billing and verifying insurance, to assist patients with utilizing their insurance benefits in the most cost-effective way for them, and making sure that our patients are comfortable and scheduled for their appointments. I learned everything I know at the first practice I joined in 2001, and have loved it ever since. With Dr. Hangval’s team since 2014, I’ve developed some very special relationships with our patients. I love working with the doctors and staff because we are an outgoing office who share the same goal: to make the appointment as pleasant as possible for the patients, and to make a good and lasting positive impression.
I moved to Northern Virginia from Texas in July 2012. I married my high school sweetheart and we have three beautiful children. My oldest is a freshman at GMU, my middle child is starting high school, and my youngest is in elementary school. We enjoy spending quality time together when we are not busy with all their extracurricular sports. In my very limited downtime, I enjoy reading.
My greatest concern is the prevention and treatment of oral disease. This involves the assessment of my patients’ oral health, taking radiographs, periodontal charting, prophylaxis, and patient education. I joined Contemporary Dentistry of Virginia in 2009, and brought with me 16 years of experience in all aspects of dental hygiene. I’ve loved my time in this office, since getting to know our patients and their families is one of the best parts of my job. Another is
working with my team. They are my second family and I love them dearly. We all have a respectful connection with each other that has created a truly wonderful team.
I have two amazing daughters who light up my life. Fang and Rosey are our four-legged, furry canine kids that complete our family. We stay very busy with activities that include Girl Scouts, music, sports, and of course getting together with family and friends as much as possible. We also love outdoor activities such as hiking, horseback riding, and kayaking.
I earned my Bachelor of Science in dental hygiene from Old Dominion University and served in the US Army Dental Corps following graduation. When my service was complete, I joined the CDV team and have been helping improve the oral health of my patients ever since. There is something truly special about this office. Every person is kind and good-natured, and we all want our patients to enjoy their time with us!
When I have time, I love speeding around in my BMW. I also enjoy traveling around the country, especially California, and going home to Korea. My dream is to travel around the world! I love trying new restaurants, with a contest going among the new hamburger restaurants. Let me know if you need a recommendation!
I joined the dental field in 1984 after earning my B.A. in Dental Hygiene and A.A. in Natural Science from Howard University. As a part of this team since 2013, I’ve enjoyed providing comprehensive dental treatment and helping patients manage their periodontal health. This office is like family to me, and I feel lucky to be a part of it.
When I am not working I love to travel. Even though I have no children, I am a Girl Scout troop leader. I am an avid baker and dream of becoming a French pastry chef. A fun fact about me is that I was a drill in the U.S. Army for eight years and spent two of those as a Drill Sergeant.
I prepare our patients for treatment and help organize the office so our patients’ care is as efficient as possible. While I’ve been here, I’ve had the opportunity to help so many people get their smiles back; it’s a wonderful experience for all of us! I have to say, I’m proud to be part of a dental team that puts patients first, from the moment they walk into the office. I have learned a lot from my doctors and team, all of whom are talented, caring, and helpful.
I have been married for nine years and enjoy time spent with family and friends, especially if we’re outdoors. I also love animals, sports, reading, traveling, and running.
My job entails making sure that all procedures are set up and ready for the patients and the doctor. I also take X-rays and impressions to aid in the proper care of our patients. Most important, I make sure that each patient has a wonderful experience and leaves happy. I began my career in dentistry in 2006 and went to school in 2008 at the Dental Assistant Training School of Maryland and Virginia to receive more training. I worked in oral surgery, general dentistry, and cosmetics until December 2014 when I started working at Contemporary Dentistry of Virginia. Dentistry is like a piece of artwork that you bring to life to improve the lives, health, and happiness of patients.
I am a mother of a wonderful son and a long-haired beagle named Daisy who is very loving and full of energy. My son and I work out together and enjoy healthy meals, but we also share a sweet tooth! Much of my family lives close by and I visit them often. Life is wonderful!
I became a dental assistant in 1995; 20 years later, I joined Dr. Hangval’s team! I assist him with many of our patients’ procedures, as well as in surgery. Learning from him has been one of the highlights of my career. I love working as a member of a cohesive team, and we certainly have that here at Contemporary Dentistry of Virginia. Our patients aren’t the only ones who leave the office with a smile! We all love it here and it shows!
The reason I became a dentist was to show people another side of dentistry. I wanted to bring a softer side of dentistry, with comfort, compassion, and precision, to everyday people like myself. I want people to get the dentistry that I always wanted to receive. No one goes to the dentist for fun; my goal is to have my office be a safe, pain-free environment where my patients feel completely at ease.
Education & Continuing Education:
I graduated high school in 1983 and became involved in dentistry by working in the denture lab at UCLA. This built upon my foundation in the arts by utilizing my love of working with my hands.
• California State University at Northridge
• University Of Texas at Houston School of Dentistry
My passion in cosmetic and reconstructive dentistry led me in my lifelong pursuit of surgical and prosthetic education. I have worked and studied in Texas, New Mexico, and Virginia, and incorporate all that I have learned to enhance my practice.
For more than 20 years, I have tried to excel at what I do to become a master at the art of dentistry and all its facets. I want my patients to experience the dentistry that I would insist that my family would receive.

Outside the Office
Originally from Victoria, Texas, I have lived in Fairfax for seven years. I have an amazing wife, Sarah, and two young daughters, Alexis and Olivia. At home with my family is where I love to be when I’m not in the office, but I do take time to volunteer with the MOMS project to bring urgent dental care to the needy.
Went in today for the first time, for a last-minute emergency appointment. The office got me in and took care of an urgent need. Dr. Acosta and his staff made me feel very welcome and consistently checked to make sure I was doing OK. I was very impressed and look forward to using this team for a long time!
The entire experience in having two extractions was over and above anything that I have experienced in any other dental visits in the past. From the very first contact to the follow up visits, this office and Dr. Hangval were professional, friendly and above all, provided a great service and an experience that is second to none.
Best dental car experience encountered in 50 years. The phone and front desk staff were empathetic and responsive to my situation requiring same-day treatment and several more appointments The dental hygienists are always personable and upbeat. Doctors Hangval and Alcantara are calm, patient and thoroughly explain their diagnosis and recommendations. Great chair-side manner.
My wife and I are visiting this practice for quite a while and always all staff has been excellent.
Great practice. Always helpful, never pushy. I'm a longtime admirer and advocate.
Great services and staff...!!
Have always been apprehensive about going to dentist as a result of bad experiences earlier in life. Dr. Hangval and his staff are fantastic. They have made my experiences as pain-free as possible and continuously check to make sure you are doing well. The quality of work is exceptional as well. Highly recommend!!!
This group has been my dentist for many years and have always provided great service. They provide easy to understand explanations of all procedures and never recommend unneeded work. All the staff members are super nice.
Dr. Alcantara is awesome. I've been going to the office and every visit to his office is a pleasant experience. Dr. Alcantara puts on my new implant crown that looks natural and is perfectly in place. I'm using the tooth with no issue at all. Besides his top notch professionalism and knowledge, he is very caring and taking care of his patients. My 2 young children have also been seeing Dr. Alcantara as well and my children love him. He was able to treat and save my 8 years old first grown-up back molar when other dentists could not and refused to. He takes time to explain braces & Invisalign to my 11 years old that helps him to choose which is right for him. My children love this practice and I would highly recommend Dr. Alcantara.
I had a wisdom tooth extracted by dr. Hangval I was extremely nervous going in but the staff and dr hangval made me feel relaxed. I knew I was in good hands the shots were painless and I was in and out really fast, the pain over the next couple days maybe got to a 3 after swishing with salt water. They more than took care of me they made my fear of dentist disappear.
I certainly and fully recommend this dental office headed by Dr Hangval. Recently I started a long awaited process with Dr. Hangval: A few implants and this kind of things. Last week we finished the first phase to find that everything is executed as planned to my great satisfaction and comfort physically and financially. I am fully confident with the office and I am sure I am in good hands! Thank you Dr. Hangval and the excellent staff of yours.
Can't say enough good things about Dr Hangval & his staff! They were prompt, professional & skilled staff. I needed several procedures that I was nervous about getting done, including a root canal. Before I knew it, I was done! Highly recommend!!
Great Dentists and staff. Very professional and so helpfull and friendly! Highly recommend this practice. Dr Hangval is amazing and truly care about his patients. I feel so welcome by all the staff they are very professional and so friendly .
After many years of avoiding the inevitable of finding a new dentist I was referred to this practice and they accepted my Insurance, worst case scenario I get my teeth cleaned. What I never expected was the helpful friendly people who work there and more importantly work as a team. They were patient and kind and carefully explained each process before completing it. When they finished they recommended a couple of follow up procedures and when I stated I wanted to research my out of pocket cost versus my Insurance they quickly looked it up and wrote it on the estimate for me. If you are like I was and are looking for caring and helpful people then look no further.
Dr. Hangval and his staff truly care about their patients. I personally do not do well with procedures. Any type of them. I had to do a gum grafting which I was terrified about doing. Dr. Hangval and his staff went above and beyond about trying to make me feel comfortable the entire time. The gum grafting went amazingly!! My healing went smooth as well I followed his direction on what i needed to do but unfortunately I had to do another small procedure. Not because of anything that he did but just because of how my mouth healed . Dr. Hangval felt bad of what happened (again nothing to his fault) and did not charge me for that surgery. Again when I went in for the surgery he and his staff were great with me. I HIGHLY HIGHLY suggest him and his staff.
Love the staff and the services provided. Everyone is kind and patient.
Appointments are always reminded, you are taken in on time (sometimes earlier if you arrive early), the staff are very friendly, courteous and obliging. Everything is explained to you prior to treatment, which I find very assuring.
Great Dentists and staff. Always very helpful and professional. Treat you like someone important and not just a patient. Highly recommend this practice. You will not be disappointed.
I have had several different dental procedures at Contemporary Dentistry. If I compare their performance with many others I experienced here and at other cities I must conclude that these have been a show of the highest quality, both medically and in their relation with me as a patient. I highly recommend them'
The work and true love of dentistry by Dr. Hangval is very rare. I really mean it when I say he loves dentistry. If you're looking at getting cosmetic work done, I highly suggest Dr. Hangval. Don't make the mistake thinking that he is only a dentist. I went to a prosthodontist who wanted $60K to pull all my teeth. What a rip-off. All that guy was interested in, was the money. I finally had some teeth removed and implants added by an oromaxillary surgeon. About a year later I went to Dr. Hangval to see about getting a permanent denture. After seeing the work by the Oromaxillary surgeon, Dr. Hangval saw that one of the implants was placed between two molars that will eventually affect the quality of the partial denture. As a temporary (until I get the permanent denture), Dr. Hangval made me a removable partial denture. When I got it, he fit the first time. He did some extra work on the denture at no charge to me. Check this guy out. Dr. Hangval is also going to build up some bone between two teeth (usually done by a periodontist). I trust him completely to do an excellent job.
